#1 Get into the Festive Spirit

Enjoy the celebratory atmosphere of the city during December, as you shop for Christmas or spend time with loved ones. Soak up the festive decorations, find Santa and much more.

The annual City of Melbourne’s Christmas Festival will centre around the Christmas Festival Hub at Federation Square. St Paul’s Court in Fed Square will be transformed into a magical Christmas wonderland. This new location will feature a spectacular 16 metre Christmas tree plus annual favourites with Santa’s House, the nativity scene and free photos with Santa.

The new Santa’s Lil Helper app will take visitors on an augmented reality experience, transforming numerous city sites, including Degraves Street, Howey Place and Federation Square, into Christmas scenes.

“Santa has lost his phone which contains his all-important naughty and nice lists, and without it, he can’t deliver presents,” the Lord Mayor said. “We’re asking children and big kids alike to use our innovative app and save Christmas by helping reunite Santa with his phone throughout Melbourne’s laneways,”

“The app will turn our famous sites into enchanted wonderlands and popular animated characters including Santa and the nutcracker soldier come to life right before their eyes.”

The much loved Christmas projections will return this year with animations focused on Santa and his team as they prepare for the big day. New decorations including Santa’s throne and sleighs will also be unveiled through the city, with the giant Christmas bauble returning to Federation Square following its success with photographers and selfie fans last year.

#2 Summer Sport

Warm sunshine, a beer in hand and your best cheering voice as you sit in the stands is what summer in Melbourne is all about.

One of Melbourne’s favourite sporting events, The Australian Open, runs from January 15 to 28. A host of big names have already confirmed they will be fighting it out on the Melbourne courts including Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Kei Nishikori, Stan Wawrinka, defending champion Roger Federer and world number 1 Rafael Nadal plus new mum Serena Williams and sister Venus. Australian hopefuls include Nick Kyrgios, Daria Gavrilova and Ash Barty.

A fun day out for tennis aficionados and novices alike, there is plenty of excitement on and off the court with a variety of off-court entertainment and dining options.

For those who prefer cricket, there is a host of summer cricket playing throughout the summer months including:

  • Sheffield Shield, Round 5, Victoria V Western Australia, 3 December, MCG
  • The Ashes, Fourth Test/Boxing Day Test, Australia V England, 26 December, MCG
  • One Day International Series (ODI), First ODI, Australia V England, 14 January, MCG
  • T20 International Series, Third T20, Australia V England, 10 February, MCG

#3 Curtain Up: Music & Theatre

For lovers of musical theatre, two of the great shows that will be playing during summer include Dream Lover, The Bobby Darin Musical at the State Theatre from 27 December and Priscilla – Queen of the Desert at the Regent Theatre from 21 January.

For your (free!) summer soundtrack, put the 2018 Sidney Myer Free Concerts in your diary. Running across three nights during February, enjoy balmy evenings and classical music. Pro tip – the gates open at 4.30pm for a reason, arrive early to secure your spot before the 7.30pm start time.

#4 Outdoor Adventures

Take advantage of the beautiful weather and go exploring – go on foot or even hire a bike. We love to cycle down Southbank and then meeting up with the Main Yarra Trail that runs along the side of the Alexandra Gardens and along the Yarra River.

Or see the city from the river. Sure you can take a regular boat (a ferry down the Yarra is lovely) but why not take a mode of transport that epitomizes everything summer, an Aqua Donut Boat! Get a group of friends together, BYO bbq fixings and a favourite playlist and have a day of fun to remember. Located closeby to the hotel this local activity is a much-loved secret, plus talk to reception about organising a bbq pack to take with you on the boat, we have all the delicious details sorted for you.

Book your summer getaway to the most liveable city in the world.
